VDEh has produced recruiting film "STUDY METALLURGY!"

In order to increase the number of students, VDEh launched the training initiative "Study Metallurgy and Materials Engineering!" last year. As the foundation of the campaign, the website www.studier-metallurgie.vdeh.de was launched and an electronic postcard was sent to schools and career information centers. Now VDEh has produced a recruiting film on the topic.

The shortage of young talent in STEM subjects is not new. Now our industry is also facing a far-reaching transformation, at the end of which CO2 neutrality is to be achieved. To meet this challenge, the steel industry in particular needs numerous young metallurgists and materials engineers to shape the replacement of carbon-based blast furnace technology with hydrogen-based direct reduction. This training initiative was launched in 2021 to increase the number of students, particularly at the metallurgy institutes of RWTH Aachen, TU Clausthal, the University of Duisburg-Essen, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the University of Leoben.

Now the campaign has been further developed with the production of the recruiting film. Together with the media agency ams Videograph, a plot was developed that showcases four young metallurgists who portray how fascinating it is to work on the transformation of the steel industry and the development of green steel. "Our film lives from the fascination of the four young engineers for the subject of steel. That's where real enthusiasm comes across. Of course we had an idea for the film, but there was no predefined script for the spoken text. It emerged spontaneously from a relaxed interview. And it is this palpable honesty that makes the film stand out," says Frank Terpoorten, conceptual designer at ams Videograph. Peter Schmieding, Head of Communications at VDEh, adds: "The transformation of the steel industry is a great, but also fascinating challenge. We should use it as an opportunity to attract young talent to our industry."
