VDEh this year's organizer of the“Conference Materials Testing"

On 5/6 December 2024, the VDEh Steel Institute held its annual “Materials Testing Conference” in Krefeld. A good 120 heads from universities and industry took part in this industry get-together for materials testers. The more than 50 presentations were rounded off by the Galileo Award ceremony for Dr. Christoph Schweizer from the Fraunhofer Institute IWM, a science slam and a discussion forum. This program was accompanied by a sponsors' and trade exhibition.

Our country's hydrogen ramp-up also marks the hour of materials testing: although the steel pipelines installed in the gas network are basically suitable, the interfaces need to be tested: Valves, flanges, compressors, fittings, weld seams. With over 400 distribution network operators, this is an enormous challenge that brings materials testing into the public eye. Materials testing wants to seize the opportunity - especially when it comes to recruiting specialists and young talent. This challenge, which also offers opportunities, was of course also the topic of the “Materials Testing 2024 Conference”.

In addition, the tried-and-tested topics of fracture mechanics, wear, fatigue and damage analysis, characteristic value determination, standardization and quality assurance and the various measurement and testing techniques were once again covered. Exciting fields are currently opening up in the field of measurement techniques, which were also a must at the conference: AI-supported testing methods and testing techniques on a microstructure scale. Some of these new techniques will soon be state of the art and, with the support of scientists, will be incorporated into norms and standards - the panel discussion “Standardization - door opener and tool” showed how this can be achieved.

With this combination of proven and new topics, inspiring plenary and evening lectures, a science slam and the accompanying trade exhibition, the program committee designed a conference schedule that was thoroughly enjoyed by the 120 visitors. One highlight of the event was the presentation of the Galileo Prize to Dr. Christoph Schweizer from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials.

The “Materials Testing Conference” is a joint event organized by the VDEh Steel Institute, the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) and the German Association for Materials Research and Testing (DVM). The annual event is organized alternately by the three cooperation partners
